February Update: "Rogue Cupcake!"


Greetings Space Citizens!

It's been a while, eh? Hope everyone's doing well and staying healthy! Here's what we've been up to...

We totally overhauled how player stats and mods work! In addition, there’s a new series of quests related to debts and payin' rent. Also, a very somber encounter in the Memorial? Lastly, but certainly not leastly, a whole boatload of small quests, content additions, and maybe a kitchen sink or two!

We go into deeper detail about some of the changes here, but in summary:

Stats and You

Stats are now treated as an expendable currency in the game! When the player encounters a gated choice or a work shift, they’ll spend a relevant stat. Once they player sleeps, their stats will recharge back to full! Leveling and xp have also been removed, and instead hard stat increases are mostly handled by mods and the player’s choice of background during the intro.

In support of all this, lots of stat checks have been added to quests. We’ve also made most of the previously invisible choices, well, visible! We heavily encourage the player to make use of the Cafe and Bar to control their daily soft stat values, and be careful! If you try to do something when the relevant stat is at zero, you might become exhausted!

The Rent

If the player accumulates debts via the shop or rent they’ll be visited by some old friends. This will happen every Monday, and it can get a bit rough! Thankfully there’s a way to get the thugs to back off, and even a super-secret method to live totally debt free! We’ll only say that it’s worth remembering… who likes snacks?

Somber Memories

If the player visits the memorial they might encounter a rather intense situation! While it might seem pretty scary, don’t worry - you’ll get through it fine! Unless you really want to start a fight, but why would you want to do that?!

Boats and Trucks

In addition to all the above there’s a ton of smaller content additions, fixes and requested features. It’s been quite the journey! The team encountered some major life changes and medical difficulties over the past year, but here we are still doing what we can to help you build a better post-apocalyptic future in spaaaaace!

Additions

  • New music and sound effects for various quests.
  • Player now selects a background during the intro that awards base stats.
  • Player ID is now three different items, reflecting background choice.
  • Added two quests related to rent.
  • Added rent collection system, including ways to temporarily or permanently bypass it.
  • Most major quests now have stat and mod checks (visible and invisible) with minor new content.
  • Some second tier mods added.

Balance and Adjustments

  • Cafe and Bar prices have been increased.
  • Credits now visible on main game page.
  • Hand mods are now Heart mods, Feet is now Body, Torso is now Tech.
  • Mind, Heart, and Body mods now exclusively handle Hard stat increases.
  • Tech mods now exclusively handle "special" abilities. 
  • Some previously hidden choices are now visible even when stat/mod requirements aren't met.
  • Background now takes place of gender choice during the intro.
  • Gender choice moved to later conversation with Niobe.
  • Mind stat now controls player attack rating in combat.
  • Removed ability to reset stats with Mad Eddy.
  • Vending Mechanics now gives a large credit award instead of a stat increase.
  • Mr. Gifted no longer awards stat increases for his first quest.
  • New navigation gui graphic.
  • Losing combat will now result in a 'beat up' status till the player sleeps.
  • Working while the relevant stat is at 0 will now result in exhaustion, lower pay and no double-shift bonus.
  • Some buttons are now highlighted during the intro to help guide new players.
  • Day of the week is now visible to the player.
  • Changed some gender neutral references.
  • Combat is now harder and a bit quicker.
  • Numerous small text adjustments.

Fixes

  • Gerd and Bert now have proper portrait assignments during the intro.
  • The Cafe should now charge properly for service.
  • Updated notifications to show proper pricing in Cafe and Bar.
  • Implemented much better control over upper and lower stat limits, preventing various crashes.
  • Small pause inserted into revival scene to prevent click-through.
  • Player should no longer be able to navigate away when Niobe is talking during intro.
  • Some names that displayed as ??? should displayer correctly now.
  • Fixed multiple bugs related to mods and shopping.
  • Fixed some bad image references causing crashes.
  • Some portraits moved a bit to the left for better text clearance.
  • Combat results now display after mushroom fight.
  • Numerous other small fixes and adjustments.

Engine and Debug

  • New notification system with greater automation.
  • Debug now covers items, mods, and all quest flags. 
  • Items, mods, and quest flags now get automatically added to debug on creation.
  • Items/Mods are now simpler to create.
  • Stats and Mods now share the same functionality.
  • Added framework for scenes to appear while eating/drinking.
  • Removed/consolidated a large number of old functions and variables that were causing issues.
  • UI button awareness added to debug.
  • Removed Sully related test from the intro.
